Day 3. Tony's chair


 Day 3. 

The pad is rather too small. I ran out of room and the chair is squashed. It also isn't symmetrical and the two arms should follow the same angle. Still I will improve. The main thing is, I did it! Yay! It took me ten minutes and at the end my heart was racing with anxiety. This will get better. Tomorrow I could try a bigger sketch pad.

  16/52 Negative: Mary Rickman   This week’s prompt is ‘Negative’. It was difficult to choose an ancestor to ascribe as ‘negative’ but I have chosen Mary Rickman, my third great grandmother, partly on the strength of this silhouette portrait of her, which is reminiscent of a photographic negative.   Other negatives were events in her life and her attitude to her son, my second great grandfather, John, the member of this family who broke away and formed the Australian branch.   She was born in 1770, a handy date because it is easy to tell her age at any other date. And, for an Australian, a memorable date because in April that year, as she lay cradled in her mother’s arms, James Cook first saw the east coast of Australia.  4/52 Curious Mary Amelia Guy 1819 - 1896 Mary and Charlotte arrived in Adelaide in 1839 on the Java . Mary married John Godlee and her older sister, Charlotte Guy, was a witness. Their brother Joseph also came to Australia, but when? Was he also at the wedding?   Did Mary know John Godlee already? They had both come from Lewes, he the year before. Were they sweethearts in Sussex? Had they had a falling out? Perhaps he had asked her to marry him and she had knocked him back. Heart broken, perhaps, he fled to Adelaide and then she had regrets and followed him out? Or perhaps he had not asked her to marry him but she chased him to Adelaide? Or perhaps it was all arranged: he came out to Adelaide to get settled before she joined him. John was a Quaker but by marrying Mary, an Anglican, he was disowned by the Quakers. 32/52 Library: Mabel Joyce Godlee 1903 - 1998

  32/52 Library: Mabel Joyce Godlee 1903 -1998 ‘Mabel Joyce’ was never known as Mabel; in fact she is said to have hated that name. People called her Joyce, but she was Jay to family.   She lived to be a very old woman, in a nursing home.  A   librarian from the Burnside Library would visit the home regularly to bring her books. She had a keen mind, open to learning, until she died. The librarian got to know what she liked, serious literature, and provided it.   I realise now that Jay was probably smarter than I knew. Her favourite author was Thomas Mann, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929.   His 1921 novel, Magic Mountain was set in a sanitarium in Switzerland where in the 1930s Jay would   find herself working as a nurse.   Mann was a German intellectual who had to flee Germany during the war.
